Burlingame Avenue Streetscape
Burlingame, CA
Burlingame, CA
This major capital improvement project transformed Burlingame Avenue’s streetscape and main commercial shopping center from El Camino Real to California Drive. The project scope included the replacement of City’s water, sewer and storm drainage utilities, new decorative concrete pavers, new sidewalks, crosswalks, streetlights, asphalt concrete pavement, landscaping, planters and other site amenities. Improvements were also made to the fire and flood protection infrastructure. Angled parking was converted to parallel parking in order to widen the sidewalks and ease traffic congestion along with the addition of smart parking meters. Additional sitework included underground electrical service, at-grade sidewalk bulb-outs and trenches.
Sustainable aspects of the project included replacement of drainage connections underground and above ground to new bulb-outs with drainage facilities, underground creek channel enlargement to increase capacity, replacement of sewer mains, and doubling the amount of trees to improve shading and air quality.
This project was awarded APWA (American Public Works Association) Silicon Valley Chapter 2015 Project of the Year in the Sustainable/Green $5-$25 Million Category.
